You may wonder if it’s safe to buy used Western Digital hard drives. For some reason people are worried about their reputation.
If the drive is under warranty, you have nothing to worry about. Here is a snipet on a forum post on WD Community that should ease your worries:
“To clarify, warranties are based on the device’s serial number. We don’t care who owns it.”

The post is dated but it still rings true today. If the drive is under warranty, even if you buy it second hand, the drive is eligible to be refurbished or replaced. If the WD used drive is not under warranty, use your best discretion as to whether you want to buy it.

Update: I personally have bought nearly all of my hard drives new as they relatively cheap now. They aren’t always as in 2011 when a Tsunami hit Thailand, the flooding crippled hard drive suppliers, mainly the Western Digital factory. The prices skyrocketed. I also remembered when the 10K RPM ice pack cooled WD Raptors came out, they we’re bloody expensive as well.
