If you upgrade your Windows OS to 7 or 8 and do not format your hard drive partition, you will have to remove the Windows.old folder that takes up substantial space.
When you’re ready to reclaim your space do the following:
Remove the Windows.old Folder in Windows 8
- Hover mouse in either corner to the right of the monitor and click the Search charm
- Alternatively, press Windows key + W on keyboard
- Type
cleanup
in the search bar - Select free up disk space by deleting unnecessary files
- Select the Windows hard drive
- Under the Disk Cleanup tab, click Clean up system files
- Follow the prompts to select the drive and check boxes for files you wish to delete, including Previous Windows installations
- Select Delete Files
Remove the Windows.old Folder in Windows 7
- Click Start
- Type
Disk Cleanup
in the search bar - Select the Windows hard drive
- Under the Disk Cleanup tab, click Clean up system files
- Follow the prompts to select the drive and check boxes for files you wish to delete, including Previous Windows installations
- Select Delete Files
